Volunteering

Victoria Park Athletic Club is run by dedicated volunteers. The club would not exist or provide the service to athletes from the community we serve without the support of our volunteers.

We're constantly recruiting and training coaches to support our athletes on each of our four training evenings. There is no minimum commitment required and you don't need to have a background in athletics in particular or sport in general. We welcome all volunteers and full training will be provided by the club.

If you would like to be involved in coaching at any level, please contact Theresa Ferrie (Club Development Officer) or Gordon Innes (Secretary).

Although being involved as a coach is the highest profile job within the club it isn't necessarily the most important.
We have a very active committee that is responsible for the day to day running of the club. Committee members act as treasurers, administer coaching fees, collect annual subscriptions, administer disclosure checks and attend meetings on behalf of the club. You may have some skills or knowledge that would be invaluable to the club.

Places on the committee become available at our Annual General Meeting in October. If you would like to become involved, please speak to Theresa Ferrie (Club Development Officer) or Gordon Innes (Secretary).

Other duties within the club which require to be filled include the Team Managers - again, essential for our athletes to take part in competitions and championships. The team managers liaise with the coaches and athletes, select teams for competition and attend league meetings in support of the athletes. Again, no experience is required and any volunteers will be mentored until they are confident to manage on their own.

The club is currently looking for assistance in a few ongoing projects. We're investigating the possibility of obtaining charitable status for the club and would like any of our members or their parents with experience of this to come forward.

We're looking for volunteers to come forward to assist with registration prior to training sessions. They would welcome new athletes to the track, point them in the direction of a suitable group, record their details and hand out joining forms. These volunteers would keep a register of all our athletes arrival times. This task would start at 6.50 nightly and be complete by 7.15. This would allow our coaches to concentrate on their own tasks and allow our Club Development Officer to concentrate on recruitment at this time.

Within athletics there are other opportunities to get involved. Every event or competition requires officials to act as referees, starters and time keepers. Full training will be provided for any volunteers.

Being involved as a volunteer within the club or within athletics can be very rewarding, please give some consideration to volunteering. Every volunteer that you see around VP-Glasgow started in the same way - as the parent of an athlete. Our skill base at that point was finding our way to any given Stadium without getting lost! None of us had any prior experience of athletics - just a wish to help out and be involved in what our children were doing. We would not still be volunteering if it wasn't fulfilling and good fun.

If you would like to be involved at any level or have a skill or knowledge that you would like to share with the club, please speak to Theresa Ferrie (Club Development Officer) or Gordon Innes (Secretary).
