Endurance Update

Our club’s endurance runners don’t ease up in their training schedules during the winter months with a long sleeve top, beanie hat and pair of gloves typically being the only concessions to the cold weather.

The healthy growth in numbers attending the club’s Road Running Group, regularly taking part in a parkrun and the juniors attending midweek endurance training bodes well for the future as we look to develop the endurance side of the club.

At this time of year, the main focus for the club’s competitive endurance runners is cross country but we have still had a number of athletes competing on the road and I have listed below some notable performances:-

10K ROAD

The Ribble Valley 10k at Clitheroe on 30th December is one of the top 10k road races in the UK and Beth Potter (now concentrating on triathlon) ran a PB of 32.07 breaking the course record and posting the fastest female 10k road time in the UK for 2018. Sarah Potter was also well up the field finishing 15th female in a time of 36.30. Max Milarvie ran an excellent PB of 31.04 finishing 17th overall and 2nd in his age category.

Closer to home, Diane Ramsey, Thomas Connolly (running his first 10k) and myself all splashed our way round Bellahouston Park at the Jimmy Irvine 10k on 11th November and on Boxing Day, myself, Thomas and Robyn Connolly (running her first 10k) ran the 10k Turkey Trot at Ayr.

PARKRUNS

The last few weeks have seen VP-Glasgow athletes running at various parkruns with the biggest turnout at Victoria Park on New Year’s Day with over a dozen runners from the club taking part.

Rhian Dawes (Walmer & Deal Seafront parkrun), Claire Thompson (Pollok) and myself (Ayr) all posted first finishes. There was a 2nd place finish for Sandy Gardner at Ruchill, Sophie Sinclair at Springburn and an impressive 3rd place at Victoria Park for Craig Johnstone in 18.17. Louis Sharp (19.32) and Ella Sharp both ran course PBs at Ruchill on Saturday 19th January and on the same day Sandy Gardner (19.26) and Robyn Connolly (22.49) ran course PBs at Victoria Park. Well done to everyone from the club who has turned out at the parkruns recently, both running and volunteering.
